What’s it about?

This newsletter and its associated annual summit is founded in tribute to Phil Chambers (1953-2023)—a nationally renowned heritage consultant, UK Design Council member, charity founder, certified accessibility expert (IAAP, i.a.), co-author of the ‘Countryside for All Good Practice Guide’ and inspiring dad.

Access Heritage is dedicated to making the heritage sector more inclusive and accessible in every sense, regardless of physical or sensory abilities, education, or socio-economic background. It continues - and expands - Phil Chambers' three-decade legacy of championing accessibility and inclusion in partnership with organisations like the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic England, The Canal & River Trust and The Landmark Trust, across national museums, natural history sites, and various community spaces to ensure heritage can be enjoyed forever and by all.

What’s in it for you?

We publish two different issues per month. In the first, you can read the latest sector news (“web weavings”), inspiring feature stories and initiatives relating (but not limited) to:

  • Physical Accessibility: Designing barrier-free spaces so everyone can experience heritage.

  • Inclusive Careers: Promoting diverse hiring, apprenticeships, career transitions into heritage from other professional backgrounds, and encouraging lifelong learning opportunities in heritage.

  • Sensory-Friendly Visits: Creating inclusive audio, visual, and tactile experiences for all visitors’ learning needs and preferences.

  • Digital Access: Expanding access to heritage through innovative digital platforms and tools.

  • Cultural Inclusion: Elevating underrepresented voices to ensure all stories are part of our heritage.

The second issue of the month (usually around week three) focuses on careers in heritage. Discover the latest job opportunities, get tips on finding work experience or becoming a trustee, learn how to pivot into the heritage sector from other fields, and more!

Editor of AccessHeritage.org - a tribute to my late father's 30-year career legacy in inclusive heritage and the built environment. I seem to have inherited his fascination with the world of heritage and the issues which determine its future.
